Democracy
Like America, Singapore is moulded in a similar fashion - both countries practices Democracy. Democracy is a practice in which, people of that certain country is allowed free speech, freedom and free will. Theorotically, this is so. BUT, there are so many contradictions to this rule.
Say in Singapore. You have the freedom to buy a lipstick or any brand of goods you want. But, religion remains a sensitive topic. You have the rights to worshipp any God you believe in, but you aren't allowed to say that 'his' God doesn't exsists or 'he' is worshipping nonsense. So if we call Singapore a democratic nation, why aren't we allowed to speak our minds?
America proves no better. Just see how they handled the recent Iraqi war. They forced American rule upon the people despite opposition. Now, it results in American soilders being killed, even at present. During war, they obstructed Iraq's channels to news and updates, their attempt to stop propaganda in the country. This act itself, contradicts the America's policy of 'freedom of jounalism' or something like that anyway!
"If China sneezes, the whole world catch a cold"
In mere 11 years, one of the world's 'giant' has awaoken and brought about amazing and even scary changes in the country. Back in the 1980s, China was in their Dark Age, with no progress, no advancement. All thanks to Mao Zhe Dong. Anyway, China's economy has escalated rapidly, and they have loads of business opportunities. Because they, with a long history of 4000 years, are finally opening up! And considering that this country holds 1/4 of the entire world's population, isn't it unnerving?
And why we aren't so afraid of countries like Africa, is simply because of one factor - Education. True, huge a country they may be, they do not have the ability like China. They too, are opening up, but people aren't as willing to invest in them than China. The people in Africa aren't as educated, therefore have less trust and confidence from potential investors.
Probably the scariest part about this awakening dragon is, the country has ONE RACE and UNIFIED like hell! Qin Shi Wang made sure of that, and the Chinese are known to be loyal and patriotic. There are no divisions and that's what so threatening. Singapore at present, is the only nation that have so good bilateral ties with them, that we can consider to be part of China. Moreover, Singapore has always stuck to the fact that, most of our immigrants were from there. Mother China, we say. By sacrificing our identity as a nation and becoming a province of China, we gain protection and stability. Advanced as we may be, we reamian only a small dot on the map. The countries surrounding us are huge, with their own resources.
BUT, is it a wise choice? To be or not to be? Yeah, by becoming part of them, we have less to worry because we have backing. BUT, what if, China goes back to say communism?
THIS, people, is politics.
